Coronavirus Update - 4/1/2020

BUSD Schools Closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 Academic Year Coronavirus Update - 4/1/2020

Governor Gavin Newsom stated on April 1, 2020 that schools will not reopen for the remainder of the 2019-2020 School Year. The Governor states distant learning  will continue.

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond is to provide guidance and support to school districts regarding distant learning.

Many of you have asked valid questions regarding grades, credits, end-of-year ceremonies/celebrations, summer school, registering for classes for 2020-21, etc.  At this time, we have not received any guidance or directives from the State as to how this is to be handled. The District has made it clear to the powers that be, that this should be the priority on education.  These questions are also the foremost on our Board of Education's mind.

The hopes and the District’s positions are:

  • Students will not be penalized or negatively affected with respect to grades or credits due to enrichment activities. The enrichment activities can only help. We expect more guidance from the State of California in these areas.

  • We will be able to provide the end of year celebrations and ceremonies in some form or fashion.  You have our word that we will look at all options to hold an event, even if original plans need to be modified or postponed, before canceling anything.  At this point, nothing has been canceled.

  • Summer school will be able to start at the published dates:  June 8 - July 7, 2020
