CHYA Letter 11/16/2020
Dear Parent/Guardian of a Student in the Health Course:
A California state law known as the “California Healthy Youth Act” (CHYA) requires school districts to provide sexual health education and HIV prevention education to all students, once in middle school and once in high school.
The district has adopted Teen Talk as our Comprehensive sexual health education curriculum. Teen Talk complies with the CHYA and meets the California Health education content standards for “Growth Development and Sexual Health.” The following eleven lessons will be taught each day in their health class by the health teacher, starting on 11/30/2020.
Introduction: Values Clarification, Parent Communication and Resources; ; Sexual and Reproductive Anatomy; Sexual Identity; Birth Control; Pregnancy Options; Sexually Transmitted Infections; Relationships; Sexual Violence Prevention; Abstinence, Sex, and Decision Making; Sex in the Media; and a review.
State law allows parents to opt-out their child from all or part of any comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education under the CHYA. If you do not want your child to participate please submit an email to the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Anita Chatterjee at anitachatterjee@busd.k12.ca.us
If you have any questions regarding the CHYA or Teen Talk please contact the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Anita Chatterjee.
To learn more about CHYA, Teen Talk, and your Opt out options, please join us on November 19th at 6:00pm for a parent presentation. Please join with this Google Meet link (meet.google.com/isk-ohqz-eir). Sensitive age appropriate material will be discussed. Viewer discretion is advised.
Sincerely,
