Language Program Options
Bellflower Unified School District offers Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Programs at Intensive Learning Center and Mayfair Middle School. Students enter the DLI program through the Kindergarten level at Intensive Learning Center and continue in the program through attendance at Mayfair Middle School. Students in the DLI programs have the opportunity to earn their pathway to the California State Seal of Biliteracy which is a gold seal that is awarded to high school students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in a foreign language.
Integrated English Language Development (ELD)
All teachers with English Learners in their classrooms provide language development and literacy instruction in grade level academic content while using the California ELD Standard. This instructional method is designed to support English Learners develop English language proficiency while also learning core content in English. The emphasis is on developing core content knowledge through scaffolding strategies.
Designated English Language Development (ELD)
English Learners are provided focused instruction on ELD standards during a set time of the instructional day, in addition to their regular content area lessons. This instructional method is designed to support English Learners develop their English language skills. The emphasis is on developing academic English vocabulary and English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking through dedicated and explicit language instruction within the school day.
Effective ELD instruction should be guided by the English Learner’s English language proficiency levels.
