BUSD is dedicated to ensuring the academic success of English Learners by providing a supportive and enriching educational environment. English Learners participate in the following programs designed to enhance their English language proficiency and academic performance:
- Integrated English Language Development (ELD) All teachers use the CA CCSS content standards in tandem with the CA ELD Standards to support their English Learners. This instructional method is designed to support English Learners develop English language proficiency while also learning core content in English. The emphasis is on developing core content knowledge through scaffolding strategies.
- Designated English Language Development (ELD) English Learners are provided focused instruction on ELD standards during a set time of the instructional day, in addition to their regular content area lessons. This instructional method is designed to support English Learners develop their English language skills. The emphasis is on developing academic English vocabulary and English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking through dedicated and explicit language instruction within the school day.
Effective ELD instruction should be guided by the English Learner’s English language proficiency levels.
