Bellflower High School Pioneers Culinary Education with Jamie Oliver's Team

BHS in the culinary kitchen

On Thursday, February 22, 2024, Mrs. Ellis' Mental and Behavioral Health students participated in their first culinary arts lesson. Guided by the expertise of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's team and in collaboration with Growing Together Education, students learned a few new recipes with ingredients grown on campus in the Bellflower High School Hydroponic Freight Farm. Students were educated about the importance of food ingredients, the nutrients it provides, and how those nutrients sustain the body. Bellflower High School students are one of the first in the United States to work with the special celebrity chef team.

The Hydroponic Freight Farm produces up to 400-600 heads of lettuce per week, using only five gallons of water daily. The district’s Nutrition Services Department will collaborate with CalAPS and the “Urban Farming Project” to incorporate fresh lettuce and vegetable salad options for our students!
