Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
As all schools within the Bellflower Unified School District are closed for the remainder of the school year, GATE identification and testing is suspended until schools resume. However, we are still providing some services and students should receive differentiated instruction as appropriate.
What is GATE?
Bellflower Unified School District proudly offers the GATE Enrichment program for all BUSD GATE identified students. GATE students throughout the district will have the opportunity to select an enrichment class on a first come, first served basis. This program allows our highest achieving students the opportunity to extend their regular classroom learning and engage in rich, meaningful educational experiences. The program may also generate early interest in specialized or elective programs.
How Can My Child Participate?
Enrichment Program Classes are offered during the second and third trimesters of the school year. Students may choose to attend a class at their own elementary site or to join a class from another elementary school site. Students may take one class per session. Please note that district transportation will not be provided.
How Can We Sign Up?
Parents or guardians submit a registration/permission slip for students to participate in the program. Completed registration/permission slips will indicate student’s first, second and third choices for each trimester and emergency contact information. Permission slips will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Please turn in this permission slip to your child’s school office. Permission slips will NOT be accepted before September 30, 2019 for Winter Session or February 5, 2020 for Spring Session.
Where Can We Obtain a Permission Slip?
Permission slips will be distributed to parents during September Parent/Teacher conferences. After that they can be picked up from your child’s elementary school office.
When are Classes Held?
Each session is six weeks long. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. It is essential that your child be on time to class. If students arrive late or do not attend class, students on the waiting list will be given priority.
January 13, 2020 - February 21, 2020.
March 16, 2020 - May 1, 2020.
Note: April 9 is a shortened day. Classes will be held from 2:00-3:00 on that date. There will be no classes held during the week of April 13-17 due to Spring Break.
How Will I know if My Child is Enrolled Into an Enrichment Class?
Parents or guardians will receive a confirmation letter approximately two weeks prior to classes beginning. School offices will also have enrollment lists for your information.
What are the Classes Available?
Please refer to the GATE Enrichment Class Course Description.
How Will I be Notified if a Class is Cancelled?
Parents will be notified by phone call or written notification if the class is cancelled. It is BUSD's expectation that all classes will be held. If a regularly scheduled class is cancelled, it will be held during the make up week.
What Should I Expect for the First Day of Class?
Students must turn in their emergency contact form on the first day of class to be admitted. Teachers will take attendance and begin immediately. Any students on the waiting list will be admitted if there are no shows and there is space in the class.
Parent/Guardian Pick Up
It is expected that students will be dropped off and picked up from class on time. There is no after class supervision.
