Special Education

The Special Education Department partners with families and educators to provide individualized supports for BUSD students with disabilities, helping each student make meaningful progress toward a high school diploma or a certificate of completion in the least restrictive environment.

What We Provide
  • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student’s strengths and needs

  • Specialized academic instruction and classroom accommodations/modifications
  • Related services, which may include speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, and behavior supports
  • Assistive technology and accessibility supports
  • Transition planning and services to support life after high school (college, career, and independent living)
Eligibility and Compliance
  • Services are provided in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and applicable state and federal laws.

  • The District conducts evaluations to determine eligibility and collaborates with families to develop and implement IEPs.

  • Parents/guardians are vital partners and have rights and safeguards throughout the special education process.

How to Access Services

Every student deserves the support they need to learn and thrive. Bellflower Unified School District actively identifies, locates, and evaluates children and young adults from birth through age 21 who may have disabilities and are not currently receiving the services they need to work toward a high school diploma or certificate of completion. In some cases, services may begin at birth and continue through age 22.
