Substance Free Schools

The Bellflower Unified School District seeks to ensure that every student is provided with a safe and healthful learning environment. Therefore, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by students and/or visitors will not be tolerated on school campuses or at any school-related function. This includes edibles, electronic cigarettes, electronic hookahs, and other vapor emitting devices, with or without nicotine content, that mimic the use of tobacco products.

The district has adopted guidelines and procedures for students who use drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. These guidelines and procedures are available for inspection on request in school offices.

  • Interquest Detection Canines are used as a deterrent for substance use.
  • Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It is a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in California and the United States.
  • BUSD provides a variety of interventions for students who have been found using or in possession of tobacco, drugs or alcohol. Interventions may include:
    • Meeting with the counselor where grades & attendance are reviewed with the student.
    • Interest inventory to identify student likes, dislikes, and needs.
    • Regular check ins with an anchor adult or counselor
    • Provide the family with on campus and/or off campus resources to meet basic needs, specific family needs and/or counseling services.
    • Navigate 360 or YVAPE lessons may be assigned to educate students about the dangers of substance use.
    • RISE (Restorative Interventions - Success in Education). RISE is a two day intensive program to educate students about the dangers of drug use, identify student strengths, teach coping skills, have guest speakers present their experience with drug use, and focus on healthy futures including the creation of a vision board.
