BUSD NEWS - Superintendent’s Update, December 4, 2020
At this month’s Board Meeting, we welcomed the newly elected Board Members, Dr. Sue ElHessen and Mrs. Mayra Garza. We are excited to have these community leaders join the BUSD Governance Team.
The Board selected Mrs. Laura Sanchez-Ramirez as President, Ms. Renita Armstrong as Vice President, and Mr. Richard Downing as Clerk. The Budget Overview for Parents (English and Spanish) and School Plans for Student Achievement were approved.
The California School Boards Association recognized Mayfair High School’s Unified Sports Program with a Golden Bell Award. The program works to build “positive relationships and strong sense of community to connect students to learning,” through inclusion and acceptance by providing students opportunities to “train together and play together” in team sports. Congratulations to the teachers, staff and students who make this program a success!
Governor Newsom has issued another executive order. This order specifically allows schools to continue to operate programs that are already in place. This means our cohorts for special education and our Expanded Learning Program will continue to provide resources to our students.
When schools are able to reopen, BUSD will have appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which includes reusable masks, disposable masks, gloves, face shields, gowns, sanitizer including bottles, refills and stands. Additionally, Plexiglass dividers in place at all schools and offices where appropriate. We have replaced our oldest air filtration and upgraded all our systems with the maximum air filtration the system allows. Most importantly, the district has purchased individual High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) air filtration units for classrooms that are not supported by increased outdoor circulation to improve ventilation. We will also be installing 11 additional playground shelters at sites that can support outdoor learning spaces.
Bellflower High School Choral Groups have shared their first 2 virtual collaborations/performances. They may be viewed at the following links.

Asha Greenidge, a junior at Mayfair High School started a card program last year by making cards for front line medical workers and this year has become a school-wide project. The program called Caring Cards was featured on ABC 7 news’ all good news segment. See Asha on ABC7 here! Materials for cards may be picked up in front of Mayfair High School from 8am-2pm. Finished cards may be returned during the same hours. The last day for card pick ups is December 17, 2020.
SHS Alumni, Katie Gonzales, was featured on Good Morning America 3. Katie participated in the Entrepreneurship and Design Thinking class with Mr. Brian Ahumada through CalAPS and created a slime business, Slime Gets Lit! Congratulations to Katie.
