Information for Parents
The BUSD Language Assessment Center is located in the same building as the District's Early Childhood Education Office and serves all of the schools in our district. The center's primary function is to test new students that speak a langauge other than English as indicated on the Home Language Survey. Students are tested as part of their enrollment process to determine their level of English in compliance with state and federal mandates.
The Language Assessment Center is located at 9301 Flower St., Bellflower, CA 90706. Call 562-804-7633 for appointments
The assessment Center hours during the school year are Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:00 P.M. Hours vary during the summer.
Upon enrolling your EL students in one of our schools, you will be asked to fill out a Home Language Survey. After filling out the Home Language Survey at the school site, it will be determined by the school's registrant if you will need an appointment with our office for your student to be assessed. If needed, please call the Assessment Center at the phone number above for an appointment.
You will need the following documents when you come in:
- Home Language Survey
- Passport or Birth Certificate of the student(s)
We will also need to know the last school your student attended. Please be prepared to provide that information when making your appointment.
On the day of your appointment, your child will be assessed with the English Language Proficiency Assessment test. It is used throughout our state to test a student's English language abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking and to determine if your child needs additional assistance in any of these areas.
Expect to spend approximately two hours for testing at the Assessment Center. If your student speaks little to no English, testing could take much less time. After the student completes the test, you will be given an explanation of the preliminary results as well as Reclassification criteria. A copy of your student's scores will be forwarded to the appropriate school site which will be used by the school's staff for the correct classroom placement of your student.
