  • Teacher of the Year

    Bellflower Unified School District is excited to announce that Kim Ashton has been selected as the Teacher of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year. Kim has worked for BUSD for 26 years! She always has a positive attitude and is willing to learn and implement something new if it will help her students. She is trained in Thinking Maps, Word Study, Growth Mindset, Restorative Practices, and more. She is a dedicated professional who has an unbridled passion for education and learning. Kim actively collaborates with school and district teams to support teachers. She even develops lessons and shares them with her colleagues on important topics such as restorative practices and growth mindset. She is a dedicated educator and valued BUSD team member who is committed to building futures for BUSD students.

  • League of Hunger Heroes Award

    On behalf of No Kid Hungry, Superintendent Tracy McSparren presented Director of Food Services Candice Crump with an award for being chosen to the League of Hunger Heroes for California for 2021. Special appreciation was also given to Food Services Supervisor Donna Vaea. Both BUSD employees have gone above and beyond to coordinate and assure our students were fed during the 2020-2021 school year.

  • School Lunch Hero Day

    Between preparing healthy meals for BUSD students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, BUSD school nutrition professionals are true heroes. On May 7, 2021, we celebrate them and the difference they make for BUSD students!

  • Public School Volunteer Week

    The BUSD Board of Education has established April 20-24, 2021, as Public School Volunteer Week. School volunteers form an essential link with the community and help to show our youth that the greater community cares for their welfare and supports them in their efforts to grow and become hard-working, thoughtful, and responsible adults. BUSD staff are grateful for the dedication of so many parents, caregivers, neighbors and friends who give of their time and talent to ensure the best education for our students.

  • 2021 Graduation Ceremony

    We are excited to announce that we will be holding an in-person graduation ceremony this year for the class of 2021. BUSD will continue to follow LACDPH guidelines for graduation. This means that while we are able to hold an in-person ceremony, it will look different from previous years. BUSD staff will continue to work closely to assure a special and safe graduation for our seniors. Additional information will be sent to senior parents from their school site in the coming weeks.

  • Unified Sports Program at Mayfair Middle/High School

    Congratulations to the Unified Sports program at Mayfair Middle High School. The program led by Lindsey Hutton, Education Specialist, Kristina Robertson, Adaptive Physical Education Teacher, and Anne-Marie Sharp, Adaptive Physical Education teacher is the recipient of California’s leading educational honor, the Golden Bell Award. The Golden Bell Awards are presented by the California School Boards Association (CSBA) to promote excellence in public education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance practices. Bellflower Unified School District believes that “positive relationships and strong sense of community connect students to learning,” which is evident in its mission to empower students to “demonstrate respect for themselves and others in a dynamic, diverse, and global society.” Unified Sports is an innovative program that exemplifies this mission as its goal is to promote inclusion and acceptance by providing students opportunities to “train together and play together” in team sports. Students participate in competition in areas including basketball, cheerleading and track. Congratulations to Mayfair’s Unified Sports program for receiving the Golden Bell Award.
