| Frank E. Woodruff Elementary School is located in Bellflower. The facilities include 38 regular education classrooms, a multipurpose room (which also serves as the school cafeteria), a library/computer lab, and a reading lab. Woodruff serves 890 students. The attendance rate at the school was 95.35 percent during the prior school year. Student enrollment includes a variety of ethnic backgrounds: American Indian .7 percent, Asian 2.3 percent, Pacific Islander 2.4 percent, Filipino 2.6 percent, Hispanic 61 percent, African-American 15.6 percent, Caucasian 15.3 percent. Students at Frank E. Woodruff receive appropriate and challenging academic curricula. Daily lessons include ways in which the subject matter relates to real world situations and careers. Students are given opportunities beyond their classrooms to experience the world of work through student council activities, working in the school cafeteria or in the office, cross-age and peer tutoring responsibilities, and after school academic and enrichment classes. The school has 35 regular education teachers, a special education teacher, a resource specialist, a reading specialist, and two administrators. Other personnel serving the school include a psychologist, two health assistants, a Title 1 teacher and a speech and language therapist. Every teacher meets the credential requirements of the State of California. Fifty-Five percent of our certificated staff have advanced degrees. A Student Study Team meets weekly involving classroom teachers, the guidance intern, special education resource teacher, principal, and other support staff. Students experiencing difficulty in any phase of the school program are considered in a collaborative process of defining student needs and recommending remediation. A deputy sheriff working with the Success Through Awareness and Resistance (STAR) program provides instruction to students in grade six concerning gang drug abuse prevention and building student self esteem. The guidance intern works with individuals and groups from all grade levels. Through the Well Child Clinic, cosponsored by Kaiser Permanente and the Bellflower Unified School District, medical evaluations are provided for students. District schools also participate in a state self review once every four years. Frank E. Woodruff is currently conducting a review. A three year action plan in mathematics and language arts was developed as a result of the self review process which included goals for assessing students in mathematics, using critical thinking and problem solving strategies, and using mathematical knowledge to resolve problems in practical situations. Frank E. Woodruff's next Coordinated Compliance Review (CCR) is scheduled for the 2003-2004 school year. We offer a variety of after school and supplemental programs to support student achievement. These programs include: tourmalines, math club, computer club and the chess club. Extended care is provided through After-school Program Promoting Learning and Enrichment (Apple) where students experience recreation, enrichments and homework help daily from 3:00-6:00. The mission of Frank E. Woodruff is to regard each child entrusted to us as a leader and a person; to instill a desire for lifelong learning, to instill knowledge and values; and to develop an integrity and civil responsibility. |
