Ramona Elementary School is located in Bellflower, California. The facilities include 30 classrooms, a multipurpose room that also serves as the school cafeteria, a library, three computer labs, a psychologist’s office, a resource specialist room, a guidance counseling room, and a speech and language room. The district also operates an after-school program, Project APPLE, on the Ramona campus.
Ramona serves approximately 713 students from a variety of ethnic backgrounds: Asian 2 percent, Filipino 2 percent, Pacific Islander 2 percent, Hispanic 77 percent, African-American 11 percent, Caucasian 4 percent, and 2 percent multiple ethnicities. Serving these students are 22 regular education teachers, three special education teachers, and an administrator. Other personnel serving the school include a psychologist, a health assistant, a guidance intern, a case manager, and a speech and language therapist. One hundred percent of our teaching staff holds appropriate California teaching credentials.
Our mission at Ramona is to establish a strong foundation to develop each individual socially, academically, and behaviorally. Our belief is that this foundation should include standards based instruction in the core subjects utilizing technology as a tool for learning, exploring, and creativity. Our teaching staff provides additional support and/or enrichment to meet our students’ needs through our extended day program called “Ramona Plus.” Students also have opportunities to participate in GATE classes and Student Council. We consider our students to be scholars and encourage and teach them what it means to be a scholar throughout the year. Students learn about the six pillars of character (respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, citizenship, fairness) and relate these ideas to their lives so that they can become a scholar.
We believe that staff development activities are essential for maintaining a quality education program for students; therefore, the district provides more than 300 hours of staff development activities for teachers and classified staff. Also, district coaches in the area of language arts and mathematics help serve as mentors and provide demo lessons for our teachers. The emphasis of staff development is on strategies that help to support academic achievement.
Our students are Ramona Rams: They reach for the stars by being responsible and respectful; They always do their best by being trustworthy and a good citizen; and They make each day special by being caring and fair.
