The Intensive Learning Center is located in Lakewood. The facilities include an administration building, 43 regular education classrooms, a multipurpose room, computer and science labs, an automated library, and a quality playground.

The ILC serves 657 students. The daily attendance rate at the school is 97.32 percent. Student enrollment includes a variety of ethnic backgrounds: Asian 11 percent, Filipino 5 percent, Hispanic 44 percent, African-American 20 percent, Caucasian 18 percent and multiple 2 percent.

The school has 30 regular education classrooms, and an administrator. Other certificated personnel serving the school include a psychologist and a speech and language therapist. All certificated staff meet the credential requirements of the State of California. A significant number hold advanced degrees, and all have pursued course work beyond their bachelor’s degree. Teachers work in grade level teams to provide excellent instruction for all students. All students who attend the ILC are expected to abide by a strict uniform dress code.

Throughout the school year, teachers are involved in various staff development activities that increase the skills and knowledge needed by teachers to implement an effective instructional program. The district provided more than 300 hours of staff development activities for teachers and classified staff. The staff development programs at the Intensive Learning Center support teacher professionalism and are based on school needs. One hundred percent of the teachers took advantage of district, school, and/or outside staff development training.

In May 2000 the Intensive Learning Center received the California Distinguished School Award and received the National School Boards Association Magna Award.
