Academic Performance Index (API) is the cornerstone of the state’s accountability requirements. API is a single number, ranging from a low of 200 to a high of 1000, which reflects the school district’s performance level and progress based on the results of statewide testing.  The statewide goal for all schools and districts in California is to attain a score of 800.

The information that forms the basis for calculating the API comes from the results of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program and the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) was designed to significantly improve student achievement in high school and to ensure that students who graduate from public high schools can demonstrate grade level competency in reading, writing, and mathematics. All California public school students except eligible students with disabilities must satisfy the CAHSEE requirement, as well as all other state and local requirements, in order to earn a high school diploma.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is the series of federal annual performance goals established for the school district. Each year, the district must meet four sets of requirements to meet AYP: 1) student participation rate on statewide tests; 2) percentage of students scoring at or above the proficient level ion English-language arts and mathematics on statewide tests; 3) growth API; and 4) graduation rate.

Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) are the minimum percentages of students who are required to meet or exceed the proficient level on the state assessments used for AYP (requirement 2).  AMOs will continue to rise each year so students in California can meet the federal goal that by 2014 100% of students perform at or above the proficient level.

The assessment information that is used to determine AYP come from the grade 2 – 8 English-language arts and mathematics results of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program and grade 10 English-language arts and mathematics results of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
